Each participating student must create a storyboard or written script for a 30-second public service announcement (PSA) to help prevent speeding.

One Grand Prize winner will win $1,000 and a trip to NYC to have his or her PSA filmed professionally. Plus, the winner and his or her PSA video will be featured on Teen Kids News and in select Scholastic magazines! See the Prizes section below for more details.

Contest Overview

  • Entries must be storyboards or written scripts on 8.5 x 11 paper that reflect the PSA topic—preventing speeding—and should be 30 seconds in length.
  • No videos, discs, or digital submissions will be accepted.
  • Only individual entries will be accepted—no group entries permitted.
  • Teachers may mail all students’ entries in one envelope for the class—each entry does not need to be in a separate envelope.
  • Each entry must have a completed and signed contest entry form stapled to it. Download the entry form above. (Note: You may want to print and complete the teacher portion of the entry form before copying it to distribute to students.)
  • Online submissions are not permitted.

Judging Criteria
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality and creativity [30 points] (Is the PSA unique and creative?)
  • PSA concept [30 points] (Does the PSA clearly and accurately address the contest topic—to help prevent speeding? Are the message and concept effective?)
  • Clarity of message [30 points] (Is the idea communicated clearly? Is the PSA well organized?)
  • Quality of writing [10 points] (Does the PSA reflect proper spelling and grammar?)

Student Prizes

  • The Grand Prize winner receives $1,000 and a trip to New York City, where a professional film crew will transform the student’s entry into a 30-second video! The winner and PSA video will be featured on Teen Kids News and in select Scholastic magazines.
  • Four Runners-up (two from grades 6–8 and two from grades 9–12) will receive $500 each.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations
The Princeton Prize in Race Relations recognizes high school students who are helping improve race relations in their schools or communities. Recipients of this prize are awarded $1,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Princeton University to attend the Princeton Prize Symposium on Race. Terry Scholarship at the University of Houston
What is the Terry Foundation Scholarship?
The Terry Foundation Scholarship is for spring 2018 graduates of Texas high schools who demonstrate leadership ability, financial need, and scholastic achievement. The amount of the Terry Scholarship is based upon the cost of attendance at the University of Houston and can be applied to the cost of tuition, fees, books, on-campus room and board, and miscellaneous expenses. The package also includes a one-time study abroad stipend of up to $5,000. The Terry Foundation Scholarship is a last-dollar award and, as such, Terry Scholars will have all unmet financial need covered by the Terry Scholarship.
Who Qualifies for the Terry Foundation Scholarship?
Students nominated to the Foundation display strong academic ability demonstrated by SAT/ACT scores, GPA, and class rank. These students are also engaged outside the classroom, participating in extracurricular activities and holding leadership positions. Additionally, all nominees demonstrate some level of financial need.
How to Apply
The UH Terry Scholarship Committee at the University of Houston seeks strong candidates to nominate to the Terry Foundation for interviews. To be considered for nomination, candidates must complete an online application and submit supplementary materials via email or mail.
Qualified students should submit their completed Terry application, together with the supporting materials, at their earliest opportunity, but no later than January 19, 2018 via mail and online. All supplementary materials sent via U.S. mail must be postmarked no later than January 12, 2018.​

Eber Ephlin Scholarship
The Ephlin Scholarship is a need-based scholarship for all new incoming freshman students planning to attend a Lamar institution who are products of the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District or resident of the Griffin Park area in the Port Arthur Independent School District.
2. Selected recipients must attend a Lamar institution.
3. Recipients must have financial need, demonstrated academic ability, and maintain a minimum overall G.P.A. of 2.50 to remain eligible. (Recipients must be of high mental capacity, diligent, and eager to improve through education.)
4. A completed application must be submitted with a brief personal statement highlighting the student’s qualifications for the scholarship.

We Build Our WorldTexas A&M University College of EngineeringLike last year, your students who apply to the College of Engineering will be holistically reviewed for a seat in General Engineering. This includes the students who qualify for top 10% and automatic academic admission. The holistic review includes a student's academic and personal achievements, so filling out the application completely is very important. Also, the Early Action Deadline of Sunday, October 15 for the College of Engineering is just around the corner. Please assure your students that completing their admission file between October 15 and December 1, does not make them any less competitive for admission to engineering. The early action deadline only guarantees a student will hear from us by mid-December. We will provide all students who complete their admission file by December 1 a decision by early to mid-January.

NEWNew Fee Waiver Process
As reported in our Counselor Updates, since we opened our application on July 1, your students have been able to self-report if they qualify for a fee waiver. Both the ApplyTexas and Coalition applications allow students to select the criteria that make them fee waiver eligible. We hope this will simplify the process for you, since we will no longer require the fee waiver documentation as part of the initial process. If a student is selected for verification, there is the possibility that documentation may be required.

University of Dayton
The University of Dayton is offering a Leadership in Service Scholarship. Interested students must have a passion for personal development and a commitment to service. This scholarship, for students admitted to UD, is worth $10,000 ($2,500 per year for four years). The students selected will also be eligible to receive a University of Dayton merit scholarship, which can be worth up to $88,000 over four years. U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

The United States (U.S.) Presidential Scholars Program honors graduating seniors for their outstanding scholarship, achievement and promise of future success. Seniors chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars are selected by the Commission on Presidential Scholars and will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where they will be presented with a medallion at a ceremony in their honor. While there, the students will engage with accomplished people and participate in conversations and events over issues that concern America and the world. The Texas commissioner of education will nominate 10 male and 10 female candidates to apply for the honor.
Beginning in 2016, outstanding students who demonstrated excellence in career and technical education (CTE) have been included for recognition. Therefore, TEA also invites high school seniors who are participants of a CTE program graduating between January and June of 2018 to apply for the opportunity to be a U.S. Presidential Scholar. In addition to the 20 general application candidates who will be nominated to apply, the Texas Commissioner of Education will nominate five additional students who are in CTE to apply for the honor.

Are you passionate about emergency preparedness and community resilience? Looking for a leadership and/or service opportunity? If so, you should apply to be on the Texas Youth Preparedness Council! The mission of the council is to engage and empower youth in individual and community preparedness activities and roles. The council provides an opportunity for Texas high school students to enhance their knowledge of preparedness and develop leadership skills that will help them in addressing the needs of their communities. Youth will work on local preparedness projects, be an ambassador for youth preparedness on the state level, and provide a unique prospective to state agencies interested in preparedness. Students interested in University of Houston may join UH for Cougar Preview — our largest open house for future studentsSaturday, Nov. 19, 2016 or Saturday, April 1, 2017!

These are great times for students to get a preview of the UH experience! Students may register at #UHCougarPreview, students will be able to:
  • See the 667-acre campus, including a sneak peek of the residence halls
  • Learn about the admission requirements, academic programs and campus life
  • Interact with faculty, staff and current students
  • Experience what it's like to be a Houston Cougar

Texas A&M University Engineering
The Texas A&M Society of Women Engineers presents, Texas A&M University Finding Engineering. This event will be held January 27, 2017-January 28, 2017. Registration is open from 10/10/16-11/19/2016. Financial Aid
Students may begin applying for fafsa beginning October 1, 2016. If a student is planning on attending college in the 2017-2018 school year it is important to apply for fafsa as close to the October 1 opening date as possible. Please see the attached document under "important senior documents" entitled "2017-2018 Fafsa update" for more information.
